Most people go home from ACDF within a day and return to desk work in 2 to 6 weeks. The fusion usually takes 3 to 6 months, sometimes longer.
Neck problems can refer pain to the shoulder. Neck-driven pain tends to change with neck movement and bring tingling; both can happen at once.
The neck often refers pain to the shoulder blade. Clues: it changes with neck movement or comes with arm tingling. Most cases ease over 6 to 12 weeks.
To relieve a pinched nerve in the neck, use positions that ease the arm, keep the neck moving gently, and cut back on what aggravates it, like looking up.
Neck traction gently pulls the head away from the shoulders. It may help some people with a pinched nerve and is unsafe for others.
Cervical spondylosis is age-related wear in the neck. It often causes no pain; when it does, movement and strength usually help more than rest.
Neck pain with arm tingling often comes from an irritated nerve root in the neck. A nerve trapped at the elbow or wrist can cause similar tingling.
A slipped disc in the neck can cause neck pain and pain, tingling or weakness down one arm. Most people improve without surgery over 6 to 12 weeks.
Cracking your own neck now and then is usually harmless. Forceful or frequent cracking can irritate the neck, and the urge often signals stiffness.
